Welcome to the world of Equine Sports Massage Therapy.
Most people hear "massage for horses" and the first thought that comes to mind is....why does
my horse need a massage to relax? Most humans experience massage as a relaxation device to escape from the hustle
and bustle of daily life that is filled with many trials and tribulations that lead to stress.
Horses on the other hand experience their own stresses such as "why is that big blue monster coming
after me" when we know that it is simply a tarp.
However, the stress that they most commonly endure is that of worked muscles, whether it be from a
leisurely ride down a trail, a stumble in the pasture, turning barrels or quickly running down a calf at a rodeo,
holding their head tucked in a dressage class or racing through the wire in hopes of reaching the winners circle. All
of these things lead to many muscles in the horse's body working overtime to compensate for
the stress that they have just undergone.
Equine Sports Massage was designed to accommodate all horse desciplines including those horses that
are considered pasture pets. It doesn't matter what a horse does daily, what is most important is that all horses
use their muscles in the same way but to different levels of exertion.
When comparing the treatment given to horses with that of the human world it is most comparable
to massage that is given to someone in physical therapy after an injury or ailment. However, with horses we have the
opportunity not only to help an injury heal quicker but perhaps prevent one.
